Your Bitcoin is worth nothing to your heirs if they don't know how to access it. A Letter of Instructions is the single most important document you can create to ensure your family can recover your Bitcoin after you die.

This guide explains what to include and gives you a working template.

Why Your Heirs Will Struggle Without This

Unlike a bank account, there is no "forgot password" for Bitcoin. Your heirs face several obstacles:

  1. They don't know it exists — if you never told anyone, they won't know to look
  2. They can't find the seed phrase — seed phrases hidden for security may be hidden too well
  3. They don't know how to use it — even if they find your hardware wallet, do they know what to do?
  4. Time pressure — families dealing with grief often handle estates quickly, not ideal for learning Bitcoin
  5. Scams — grieving heirs are prime phishing targets

A Letter of Instructions solves all of this.

The Golden Rule: Keep Seed Phrase Separate

Do not put your seed phrase in this document. The Letter of Instructions tells your heirs HOW to access your Bitcoin and WHERE to find the seed phrase — not what the seed phrase is.

Someone who finds only your letter gets instructions, not keys. Someone who finds only your seed plate has keys but no instructions. This separation is the security model.

What to Include

Section 1: Overview

  • A statement that you hold Bitcoin and digital assets
  • Estimated total value (update annually)
  • Contact info for your Bitcoin attorney, accountant, and trusted technical helper

Section 2: What You Own

For each asset, list:

  • Asset type (Bitcoin) and approximate amount
  • Where it is held (hardware wallet model, exchange name)
  • Account identifiers — exchange username, wallet addresses (safe to include; not keys)

Example entry:

1.25 BTC — Coldcard hardware wallet in fireproof safe, master bedroom closet 0.15 BTC — Coinbase account (login email: [your email])

Section 3: Hardware Wallet Recovery

For each hardware wallet:

  • Device name, model, and physical location
  • Location of seed phrase backup (e.g., "fireproof safe" or "Chase safe deposit box, Main St, box 247")
  • Whether a BIP-39 passphrase is used and where it is stored
  • Step-by-step instructions: get the seed phrase, buy a new device from official website only, choose "Restore wallet," enter the words in order

Section 4: Exchange Account Access

For each exchange:

  • Exchange name and website
  • Login email address
  • 2FA method and how to recover it (authenticator app, SMS, backup codes location)
  • How to initiate the estate/deceased account process

Section 5: Warnings — Read Before Acting

  • Do NOT enter seed phrases into any website
  • Do NOT trust anyone who contacts you offering to help recover Bitcoin
  • Do NOT send Bitcoin to "verify" or "unlock" anything — this is always a scam
  • Do NOT share seed phrases by phone, email, or social media

Section 6: People to Contact

  • Bitcoin-literate estate attorney
  • CPA familiar with crypto taxes
  • Trusted technical contact who can help heirs navigate recovery
  • Any custodial services used (Unchained, Casa) with their contact info

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I include my seed phrase in my will? Absolutely not. Wills are public records after probate. Your seed phrase in a public document means anyone can take your Bitcoin. Keep the seed phrase and its location separate from any public document.

What if I use a multisig wallet? Multisig inheritance is more complex. Services like Unchained and Casa specialize in this. Document which keys you control, which the service holds, and include the service's contact information and recovery procedures in your letter.

How often should I update this document? At minimum, once per year — and immediately after any significant change: new wallet, new exchange account, moving seed phrase location, or large Bitcoin purchase.

What is a digital asset executor? Some states allow you to name a digital asset executor specifically authorized to handle crypto. If your jurisdiction supports this, consider naming someone tech-literate in this role separately from your general executor.

Where should I store this letter? In a fireproof safe at home, alongside your will in your attorney's files, or in a safe deposit box. Never store it unencrypted in cloud storage or email. Tell at least two people you trust where to find it.
