The Jade Plus is Blockstream's second-generation Bitcoin hardware wallet — an open-source device with a unique security architecture, QR code support, and one of the lowest price points among serious Bitcoin hardware wallets.

Blockstream is best known for building Bitcoin infrastructure (Liquid Network, Lightning, satellites), so the Jade represents a company that actually uses what it builds. Here's a full review.

The verdict: The Jade Plus is a compelling option at $65 — cheaper than a Coldcard Mk4 ($150) or Ledger Nano X ($149), fully open source, and with a genuinely novel security model. The oracle-based PIN protection is creative but introduces a different trust assumption. Best for Bitcoiners who want a portable, open-source device and are comfortable with Blockstream's security model.

Jade's Unique Security Model: Virtual Secure Element

Most hardware wallets store private keys in a secure element (SE) — a specialized chip designed to resist physical attacks. The SE makes key extraction extremely difficult even if an attacker has physical access.

Jade takes a different approach: instead of a traditional secure element that stores the key, Jade uses what Blockstream calls a virtual secure element or oracle-based PIN model.

How it works:

  1. Your Bitcoin seed is encrypted and stored on the Jade device
  2. The encryption key is split: part is on the Jade, part is on Blockstream's remote server (the "oracle")
  3. When you enter your PIN, Jade requests the missing key fragment from Blockstream's server
  4. If the PIN is correct, the server provides the fragment; Jade decrypts the seed and signs
  5. Wrong PIN attempts are rate-limited by the server — after too many wrong PINs, the server permanently refuses

Security properties:

  • Physical theft of the device alone is insufficient — the server won't provide the key fragment without the correct PIN, and limits attempts
  • Brute-forcing the PIN requires bypassing Blockstream's server
  • Even Blockstream cannot access your keys — they only hold an encrypted fragment, not the full key or your PIN

The trade-off: This model introduces a dependency on Blockstream's servers being online and honest. The Jade team addresses this with "blind oracle" mode — the server validates PINs cryptographically without being able to see the PIN itself.

Offline mode: For users who want no server dependency, Jade Plus supports an offline air-gapped mode where the seed is stored directly (without the oracle). This trades the anti-brute-force protection for full autonomy.

Hardware Features

Display: The Jade Plus's 1.9" IPS color screen is one of the best in the hardware wallet category — bright, readable, high resolution. Reviewing transaction details is genuinely pleasant compared to Coldcard's monochrome display.

Battery: Jade Plus has a built-in battery — it's a portable, self-powered device. Coldcard requires power from USB; Jade can be used standalone with QR workflows, untethered.

QR codes: The camera enables fully air-gapped operation. Jade Plus can be set to QR-only mode, making it function similarly to SeedSigner or Keystone in terms of the signing workflow.

USB-C + Bluetooth: For connected workflows, Jade Plus supports both USB-C and Bluetooth — useful with the Green wallet on mobile. Bluetooth adds convenience for mobile users at the cost of an additional wireless attack surface.

Open source hardware: Unlike most hardware wallets, Blockstream has published the hardware design files for Jade Plus. This is rare — even open-source-firmware wallets typically don't publish hardware schematics.

Supported Assets

Jade Plus supports:

  • Bitcoin (BTC) — mainnet and testnet
  • Liquid Bitcoin (L-BTC) — Blockstream's Liquid sidechain
  • Liquid tokens — other Liquid Network assets

If you use the Liquid Network for confidential transactions or faster settlement, Jade is one of the only hardware wallets with native Liquid support. For Bitcoin-only users, Liquid support is irrelevant but harmless.

Note: Jade does not support Ethereum, altcoins, or NFTs. It's a Bitcoin/Liquid device.

Companion Apps and Wallet Compatibility

Blockstream Green

Blockstream Green is the native companion app for Jade. It supports:

  • Bitcoin singlesig and multisig wallets
  • Liquid wallets
  • 2-of-2 multisig with Blockstream's co-signer (Green's standard wallet structure)
  • Full Jade Plus integration over USB, Bluetooth, and QR

Green is available on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Third-Party Wallets

WalletConnectionNotes
SparrowUSB, QRFull Bitcoin support, excellent coin control
ElectrumUSBGood for advanced users

For serious Bitcoin users, Sparrow Wallet with Jade Plus over QR (air-gapped) is an excellent workflow.

Using Jade Plus

Initial Setup

  1. Power on Jade Plus via USB-C or battery
  2. Download Blockstream Green on your computer or phone
  3. Pair Jade — Green walks through the setup process
  4. Generate or restore seed — 12 or 24-word BIP39 seed phrase
  5. Set PIN — 6-digit PIN, protected by the oracle model
  6. Backup seed phrase — write down or stamp on metal

Setup takes about 10 minutes.

Signing Transactions (QR Workflow)

  1. Create a transaction in Sparrow Wallet
  2. Sparrow displays the PSBT as a QR code
  3. Jade Plus camera scans the QR
  4. Review transaction details on Jade's screen
  5. Confirm on Jade
  6. Jade displays the signed PSBT as a QR
  7. Sparrow scans the signed QR and broadcasts

This air-gapped workflow is identical to SeedSigner, Keystone, or Foundation Passport.

Jade Plus vs. Competitors

Jade Plus vs. Coldcard Mk4: Coldcard has more traditional secure elements (two dedicated chips), a longer track record, and more advanced features (multisig XFP, anti-phishing words, seed XOR). Jade is cheaper, portable, has QR support, and is fully open-source hardware. For maximum security, Coldcard's dual SE and advanced features are hard to beat. For portability and price, Jade wins.

Jade Plus vs. Keystone 3 Pro: Keystone and Jade are direct competitors in the QR-capable, open-source space. Keystone has three secure elements (strongest physical protection in the category), a larger touchscreen, and broader altcoin support. Jade is cheaper ($65 vs. $169), Bitcoin/Liquid-only, and has the oracle PIN model. Bitcoiners who want the cheapest capable QR device should lean Jade; security maximalists who want dedicated secure elements should look at Keystone.

Jade Plus vs. Trezor Safe 3: Trezor is easier to use, has a great reputation, and costs slightly more ($79 vs. $65). Trezor uses USB (not air-gapped), which limits the security model for advanced users. Jade's QR support and portable battery give it more flexibility. Both are excellent choices at similar price points.

Open Source Credentials

Blockstream has published:

  • Jade Plus firmware: github.com/Blockstream/Jade
  • Hardware design files: published by Blockstream
  • Green wallet: github.com/Blockstream/green_android and green_ios

This full open-source stack — hardware and firmware — is genuinely rare in the hardware wallet space. Coldcard publishes firmware but not hardware designs; Ledger publishes neither fully.

Limitations

Oracle dependency (default mode): The PIN protection requires Blockstream's server to be online. If Blockstream's servers are down or the company ceases operations, Jade users in default mode cannot access their funds until they switch to offline mode.

Less battle-tested than Coldcard: Coldcard has been on the market since 2018; Jade since 2021. Coldcard has more independent security reviews and a longer track record.

Bluetooth attack surface: While convenient for mobile use, Bluetooth adds an attack surface that air-gap purists will avoid (use QR-only mode).

Green wallet requirement for setup: Initial setup requires Blockstream Green. Advanced users who want to avoid any company-specific software may find this limiting (though third-party wallets work for ongoing use).

Who Should Buy Jade Plus?

Good fit:

  • Bitcoiners who want an open-source hardware wallet under $70
  • Users who want QR-based air-gap operation with a battery-powered device
  • Liquid Network users (only major hardware wallet with native Liquid support)
  • Mobile-first users who want Bluetooth with a Bitcoin-focused device
  • People building a multisig setup on a budget

Not a good fit:

  • Security maximalists who prefer dedicated secure elements (look at Coldcard Mk4 or Keystone 3 Pro)
  • Users who don't trust any server dependency (use offline mode or a different device)
  • Frequent transactors who want maximum ease of use (Trezor or Ledger are simpler)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Jade Plus secure without Blockstream's servers? Yes, but with reduced anti-brute-force protection. In offline mode, the seed is stored directly on the device — secure but without server-enforced PIN rate limiting.

Can Blockstream access my Bitcoin? No. Blockstream's oracle server holds an encrypted key fragment. Without your PIN (which the server never sees in plaintext), Blockstream cannot decrypt your seed.

Does Jade Plus work with Sparrow Wallet? Yes. Sparrow fully supports Jade Plus over USB or QR, including advanced features like multisig and PSBT signing.

Is the Jade Plus worth it over a Trezor Safe 3? If you want QR air-gap and portability, yes. If you want the simplest possible setup with maximum third-party support, Trezor is slightly better for beginners.

Does Jade Plus support Taproot? Yes, Jade Plus supports Taproot (P2TR) addresses.

Bottom Line

Jade Plus is an excellent Bitcoin hardware wallet at $65 — fully open source (hardware and firmware), portable with battery, QR-capable for air-gapped operation, and cheaper than most serious alternatives. The oracle-based PIN model is creative and effective; the server dependency is a legitimate trade-off to understand.

For Bitcoiners who want capable, portable, air-gapped self-custody without paying $150 for a Coldcard, Jade Plus is the best option at its price point.
