Wladimir van der Laan is a Dutch Bitcoin Core developer who served as the lead maintainer of Bitcoin Core from 2014 to 2022, making him the longest-serving lead maintainer in Bitcoin's history. He took over from Gavin Andresen and guided Bitcoin through some of its most critical development periods, including the SegWit activation and the block size wars. Known online as "laanwj," he contributed extensively to the Bitcoin Core codebase and prioritized stability, decentralization, and security above all else. He stepped back from public Bitcoin development in 2022.
