Breez is a non-custodial Lightning wallet that runs LND on your device with automated channel management. This review covers its security model, fees, podcast streaming payments, and how it compares to Phoenix and Zeus.
Blockstream Green is one of the most technically sophisticated Bitcoin wallets available today. It supports singlesig, multisig, hardware wallet integration, and Lightning Network — all in a single application available on iOS, Android, and desktop.
This review covers everything you need to know about Green Wallet: features, security model, Lightning support, fees, and who should use it.
What Is Blockstream Green?
Blockstream Green is a non-custodial Bitcoin wallet developed by Blockstream, the company behind the Liquid Network, Blockstream Jade hardware wallet, and numerous Bitcoin development initiatives. Green has been available since 2019 and has gone through significant feature expansions.
The wallet supports:
- Singlesig Bitcoin wallets (BIP84 native SegWit by default)
- 2-of-2 multisig with Blockstream's Greenaddress co-signer
- Hardware wallet integration (Jade, Ledger, Trezor)
- Lightning Network via Greenlight
- Liquid Network sidechain
Security Model
Singlesig Mode
Standard singlesig wallets in Green use BIP39 seed phrases with BIP84 native SegWit addresses (bc1q...). You control the private keys entirely — Blockstream has no access to your funds. Recovery uses the standard 24-word seed phrase compatible with any BIP84-compatible wallet.
2-of-2 Multisig Mode
Green's distinctive feature is its 2-of-2 multisig mode. In this setup:
- You hold one key on your device
- Blockstream's servers hold the second key (the "Green key")
- Both keys are required to sign a transaction
This might sound like it gives Blockstream control over your funds, but the safety mechanism prevents this: if Blockstream's servers become unavailable, you can recover your full balance using a timelocked recovery transaction after a predetermined waiting period (typically 90 days).
The benefit: 2-of-2 multisig allows SMS or email two-factor authentication (2FA) to be added to transactions. Even if your phone is stolen, an attacker cannot send your Bitcoin without passing your 2FA. This is sometimes called "security without custody."
Hardware Wallet Multisig
For the highest security tier, Green supports multisig with hardware wallets. You can configure a 2-of-3 multisig where keys are held by your mobile device, a Jade hardware wallet, and a Ledger or Trezor — requiring two of three to sign. This is genuinely institutional-grade self-custody accessible to individuals.
Lightning Network Support
Green added Lightning Network support via Greenlight, Blockstream's hosted Lightning node service. The implementation:
- You hold your own Lightning keys — Blockstream cannot steal your funds
- Blockstream's infrastructure runs the Lightning node
- No need to manage channels, liquidity, or node operations yourself
- Works within the same Green app as your on-chain wallet
The Lightning experience in Green is reasonably smooth for everyday use: send and receive small payments, pay Lightning invoices, receive over Lightning. It does not expose the full complexity of channel management.
Limitations: Greenlight's Lightning is custodial in that you depend on Blockstream's infrastructure for routing. Your keys are yours, but if Blockstream's servers are down, your Lightning wallet is inaccessible. This is a tradeoff for ease of use.
User Interface and Experience
Green's interface is clean and functional rather than flashy. The app shows your wallets (on-chain and Lightning) on a dashboard, with clear balance displays and simple send/receive flows.
Strengths:
- Clear transaction history with status indicators
- UTXO management via coin control (advanced users)
- Multiple accounts within one app
- Watch-only wallet support
- QR code scanning works reliably
Weaknesses:
- Learning curve for multisig setup — not immediately intuitive
- Lightning UI less polished than dedicated Lightning wallets like Phoenix
- Less beautiful than some competitors (Muun, Blue Wallet)
Fees
Green Wallet uses dynamic fee estimation with user-selectable confirmation targets (1 block, 3 blocks, 6 blocks, etc.). The app shows estimated fees before confirming any transaction.
Lightning fees depend on Greenlight's routing. There is no fixed fee — routing fees vary by payment path. For most small payments, Lightning fees are negligible.
Blockstream does not charge a separate wallet fee. The app is free. Revenue comes from other Blockstream products and services.
Who Should Use Green Wallet?
Best for:
- Bitcoin holders who want 2-of-2 multisig security with 2FA on mobile
- Users who want hardware wallet integration for a multisig setup
- Technical users comfortable with more complex wallet architecture
- Blockstream Jade users (native integration)
Not ideal for:
- Lightning-first users (Phoenix or Breez are smoother for Lightning)
- Complete beginners (the feature set is extensive and can be overwhelming)
- Users who want the simplest possible setup (Muun or Blue Wallet are easier)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Blockstream Green non-custodial? Yes. In all modes, you hold your private keys. In 2-of-2 multisig, Blockstream holds one key but cannot spend funds without your signature. The timelocked recovery mechanism ensures you can always recover funds even if Blockstream is unavailable.
Does Green Wallet support hardware wallets? Yes. Green natively supports Blockstream Jade and also integrates with Ledger and Trezor devices for multisig setups.
Is the Lightning wallet in Green custodial? Your Lightning keys are held by you (non-custodial). However, the node infrastructure is run by Blockstream's Greenlight service, which means you depend on Blockstream's servers for Lightning functionality.
What happens if Blockstream shuts down? For singlesig wallets, your 24-word seed works in any compatible wallet — no dependency on Blockstream. For 2-of-2 multisig, a timelocked recovery mechanism lets you recover funds after a waiting period without Blockstream's key.
Is Green Wallet available on desktop? Yes. Blockstream Green has desktop apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux in addition to iOS and Android.
