Breez is a non-custodial Lightning wallet that runs LND on your device with automated channel management. This review covers its security model, fees, podcast streaming payments, and how it compares to Phoenix and Zeus.
Zeus is the power user's Lightning wallet — a mobile app that connects directly to your own Lightning node, giving you full sovereignty over your Lightning Network experience. If you run an Umbrel, Start9, or RaspiBlitz node at home, Zeus is how you manage it from your phone.
What Is Zeus Wallet?
Zeus (zeusln.app) is a free, open-source Bitcoin Lightning wallet for iOS and Android. Unlike Phoenix or Muun, Zeus does not operate its own infrastructure — it connects to your Lightning node.
Starting with Zeus 0.8+, Zeus also includes an embedded Lightning node (powered by LDK) — meaning you don't need a separate node to use it. You can be fully self-sovereign with just your phone.
Two Modes: Connected and Embedded Node
Mode 1: Connect to Your Own Node
Connect Zeus to:
- LND (Lightning Network Daemon) — most common
- Core Lightning (CLN) — supported
- Eclair — supported
- Nodes running on: Umbrel, Start9, RaspiBlitz, myNode, or any server
This gives you full control — your channels, your liquidity, your routing income.
Mode 2: Embedded Node (Zeus LSP)
Zeus includes an embedded LDK node that works without any external server:
- Zeus acts as its own Lightning node
- Uses Zeus's Lightning Service Provider (LSP) for channel opening and liquidity
- Non-custodial — your seed, your keys
- No home node required
- Lower setup friction than Mode 1
For most new users, the embedded node mode provides the best balance of self-sovereignty and usability.
Features
Node Management
- View all open channels and their liquidity
- Open new channels to any peer
- Close channels (cooperative or force-close)
- View routing fees earned
- Monitor HTLC details
- View mempool and fee estimates
Payments
- Send and receive Lightning invoices
- BOLT 12 offers (static payment codes)
- Keysend (send without an invoice)
- On-chain send and receive
- LNURL support (LNURL-pay, LNURL-withdraw, Lightning Addresses)
Advanced Features
- Watchtower support: Protects against channel fraud while your node is offline
- Multi-account: Manage multiple nodes from one Zeus app
- MPP (Multi-Path Payments): Split large payments across multiple routes
- Routing table view: See which peers are routing through your node
- Point of Sale mode: Simple merchant UI for accepting payments
- NWC (Nostr Wallet Connect): Connect Zeus to Nostr clients
Setting Up Zeus with Umbrel
The most common Zeus setup:
- Open your Umbrel node's Lightning app
- Go to "Connect Wallet" → Zeus
- Scan the QR code with Zeus
- Zeus connects via your Umbrel's Tor address (private, no port forwarding needed)
- Your channels, balances, and history appear in Zeus immediately
This works over Tor for maximum privacy — your home IP address is never exposed.
Connectivity note: Tor connections can be slow (10–30 seconds for sync). For faster access, some users configure a Tailscale VPN to their home network instead of Tor.
Zeus vs. Phoenix vs. Muun
| Feature | Zeus (embedded) | Phoenix | Muun |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial | No | No | No |
| Your own node | Yes (or embedded) | No | No |
| Channel management | Full control | Automatic | None |
| Fees | Node-operator dependent | 0.4% | High (swaps) |
| Setup complexity | Moderate | Easy | Easy |
| Technical depth | High | Low | Low |
| Routing income possible | Yes (connected mode) | No | No |
| Best for | Node operators, power users | Regular Lightning payments | Occasional Lightning |
Fees in Zeus
Fee structure depends on your mode:
Connected mode (your own node):
- You set your routing fees
- You pay your peer's fees when routing outward
- No Zeus-specific fees
- Channel open/close: standard on-chain miner fees
Embedded node mode:
- Zeus LSP charges for channel opening/liquidity
- Routing fees apply per payment
- Comparable to other non-custodial Lightning options
Security and Privacy
Non-custodial in both modes: Your private keys never leave your device (embedded) or node (connected). Zeus has no access to your funds.
Tor connectivity: When connecting to a home node over Tor, your IP and node identity are protected. This is the strongest privacy setup available in a mobile Lightning wallet.
Open source: Zeus is fully open-source at github.com/ZeusLN/zeus.
No KYC: Zeus itself requires no identity verification. Your node's connectivity to peers may have its own requirements.
Point of Sale Mode
Zeus includes a simple POS (Point of Sale) mode for merchants:
- Enter item amounts
- Generate Lightning invoice QR code
- Confirm payment
- Transaction appears in history
This is a lightweight option for small merchants who run their own node and want to accept Bitcoin in person.
Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC)
Zeus supports Nostr Wallet Connect — a protocol that lets you connect your Lightning wallet to Nostr clients (like Damus, Primal, Amethyst) for zaps and social payments:
- In Zeus, go to Settings → Nostr Wallet Connect
- Generate an NWC connection string
- Paste into your Nostr client
- Send zaps directly from your own node
This is the most self-sovereign setup for Nostr payments — your zaps come from your own Lightning node, not a custodian.
Who Should Use Zeus?
Best fit:
- Bitcoin node operators who want mobile access to their node
- Users who want to earn routing fees from their Lightning node
- Privacy-focused users who want Tor-based connectivity
- Nostr users who want their own node for zaps
- Power users who want complete control over channels and liquidity
Not a good fit for:
- Beginners (too complex for first-time Lightning users)
- Casual users making occasional payments (Phoenix or Muun are easier)
- Users without a home node (unless using embedded mode)
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a home node to use Zeus? No. Zeus's embedded node mode works without any external server. However, running a home node (Umbrel, Start9) and connecting Zeus to it gives you maximum control and the ability to earn routing fees.
Is Zeus safe for large amounts? Yes, for Lightning-experienced users. Zeus is non-custodial — your keys are under your control. For very large amounts, multisig cold storage remains preferable to any Lightning wallet.
Can Zeus earn routing fees? In connected mode (your own node), yes. If your node routes Lightning payments for others, you earn small fees. Profitability depends on your capital allocation and channel management.
How does Zeus compare to the Muun wallet? Muun is easier for beginners with no channel management required. Zeus offers more control, lower fees for node operators, and routing income potential. If you run a node, Zeus is far superior. If you don't, Muun or Phoenix are more practical.
Does Zeus work on iOS? Yes. Zeus is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
